By: Seth LegaspiWooohooo! It's back! I hope this actually jumpstarts the series back into the console. The PSP VC2 (Valkyria Chronicles 2) was disappointing in a sense due to its poorer graphics, grindy gameplay, and more complicated tech trees (not that, that is a bad thing, but it got really complicated back there). Anyways, back to the original but remastered version:
As observed, this series has unique graphics, wherein the game looks like it is all done in watercolor (just reiterating that the PSP VC2 lost this feel). SEGA really did a nice job with porting this to the ps4, since even on my larger tv, the game looks even more gorgeous (due to compression in uploading the screenshots might not be up to par). Heck, just look at the following explosion, it's amazing.
Yes, we're playing as the Imperials here, and the alternate mission to this is more impossible |
The game also has its famous BLiTZ System (Battle of Live Tactical Zones), where a mix of turn-based and a third person shooter design is observed.
In relation to the map overview image above; this remastered version also comes with the DLCs that were separately sold in the psn store for the ps3 version, this thus gives us the full experiene of playing as both sides, and possibly unlocking cool stuff for the main story. ;)
As shown above, the game had a very straight-forward, and simple squad leveling system. The simple thing about this is about how leveling the stuff there will level the entire squad, and not just your individual soldiers. So all you had to do was play the game, gain experience from the missions or skirmishes, and voila, you level up an entire group of soldiers in one go.
Similarly, the game's equipment/research system is very straight-forward as well. There is simply no need to gather resources and stuff (since that's what the government subsidizes for ye militia); all you had to do was pay some money to have it researched and equipped to all your troops (tanks not included, since there are only 2 kinds of tanks).
As for this remake; they added something that was not in the ps3 version. And yes, they are trophies! They're linked to the medals you can get in-game.
To end this review; Valkyria Chronicles Remastered has hit its target in my opinion. I once again felt the nostalgic sensation of fulfillment that I felt 8 years ago as I brought Squad 7 to glory once more.
I recommend this for fans of the original series, as well as fans of the strategy, military, and anime genre (heck this game even has an anime version). You folk will simply love how you can plan out your turn, as well as have this feeling of uncertainty since there will be some moments of luck as you use your characters in third person pov. As for those not fans of the genres I said above, this is still a good game to try. I belive that this was actually one of those hidden gems from the ps3 era, and they have rescaled the graphics to fit that of the ps4's.
My Rating:
(10/10)
Good Stuffs:

Ouch! Enemy scout triple teamed, and neutralized. |
