Some time ago, I decided to get a figure that I deemed relatively inexpensive enough to display just about anywhere... And finally, here we are now; presenting...
The goddess Madoka |
With the hype around the Rebellion movie still being there (for me it is! >_<) as of the posting of this article, I felt like I had to make at least one Madoka-related article, and thus this somewhat short review on the SQ Line - Madoka Kaname figure by Banpresto.
As with how I generally start my reviews, here's a picture of the box. Yes, it's the 'Rebellion' version.
Yes, it's the version with the pentagon-shaped base, which makes it easier to group Madoka with hersuitors friends of the same version/box color. (Of course they are also of the SQ line)
On this subject, you can see the detail that went to the figure's legs. Despite the obvious line separating Madoka's knee socks from the rest of her body, I can still appreciate the detail that went into the curves on the cloth around it.

On the subject of her leg area, I appreciate those miniature details that give an accent to Madoka's legs (those lines that show where that 'strained' muscle area is on her legs).
That white space between the heel and the front area of her right shoe, however feels like it was a cop out, though it may have been placed there to give more stability in getting this figure to stick to the stand.
Speaking of getting this Madoka figure to stand, I just have to blatantly state that it was a huge-ass hassle to get this figure to stick to the stand. I even had to resort to using tape.
The 'locking mechanism thing' that I taped |
Moving on to the figure; Banpresto was really smooth when it came to the part under Madoka's Magical Girl outfit. They were able to make a figure that is 'safe' to display where children can see it, and not ask any questions... Of the 'weird' kind...
Fine, children ask many weird questions, but I'm pretty sure you people know what I mean.
Since we're still at the figure's back area, I would like to show the 'signature' of the SQ line on Madoka's backside (It's that heart-shaped indent). It's not hard to miss, but I would like to state that it did not really do much to affect the figure's general appeal.
Just use your imagination |

In fact, I had to shine a light at this side, and angle my camera a bit just to get a clear picture of the indent, but if one's just looking for something to be used as a quick decor or something, then it shouldn't be that big of a deal. You just have to smile at the detail that went to Madoka's outfit.
The ribbons on the figure's hair really add to that cuteness effect, I mean, just look at them!
Cuteness == to Magical Girl power? |
As for the figure's pose, Madoka is in a pose wherein she has just shot an arrow at her poor, poor enemies.
This is further accentuated by her hand and arm gestures.
Heh~ ♪ |
Once again, the figure really went above my expectations with those miniature details. Just look at that pattern on the petals of her skirt.
Madoka's face was also pretty well-done by my standards.
The frills on Madoka's dress again reiterates my surprise with this figure. The attention to these details really adds to the figures general aesthetic effect.
The soul gem is also neatly located at Madoka's front here.
As for Madoka's bow, the rose at the bow's tip is pretty well-made by my standards, though it may have done better if more 'depth' was given. Her hands however, were really well done, and the fingers were all in proportion.
Talk to the hand! |
To end this, I have to say that I was positively surprised by the quality of this SQ figure despite its price. Yes there were visible 'manufacturing marks' here and there. But the overall effect of the figure is pretty decent.
Accuracy: 9/10 (The indent affects this)
Detail: 6/10 (Those manufacturing marks really hit it here)
Color: 9/10 (The pink areas with their differing tones of pink really added to the overall texture)
General awe effect: 8/10 (Not the best, but it still wipes away that 'darkness' within our hearts)
Total(Average): 8/10
If you're Homura, or if you're looking for an inexpensive Madoka figure to display and not worry too much about, then I recommend this figure for you!
